Castle In South Wales

Pembroke Castle In South Wales is a huge fortress that is in most parts intact, we offer special exhibitions and school tours. You can read all the information you need to know about a day out at the castle on this website.

Pembroke Castle in South Wales is an extremely popular attraction with both the old and young. The older people like it as they like to learn about the history of the castle and although sometimes the young people wonder what fun a castle can be they are soon converted when they learn about how battles used to be fought and learn of jousting tournaments.

This castle in South Wales was first built under the instruction of Earl Roger of Montgomery at the end of the eleventh century. But as you can imagine it was just a basic structure which consisted of palisades made from wood and somehow managed to withstand all the attacks that the celtic and welsh tribes threw at it. There was two major sieges during the early years of the castle and due to the successful resistance by the soldiers inside and then the castle became a more strategic base in South Wales and was the main place for the Normans before they started their attacks on Ireland.

Towards the end of the twelth century the earl of Pembroke at the time was William Marshall and the castle became his home. At this time the castle was still made from timber. For the next three decades this castle in South Wales was transformed and all the timber and earth structures were converted to stone making it a strong reinforced fortification that was even harder to attack.
