Immediately east of the Gatehouse is the Barbican Tower with walls nine feet thick. This tower suffered very badly in the Civil War. After its final capture by Cromwell 'Old Noll' tried to blow it up. Its great strength against a weapon which was unknown when the castle was built says much for the medieval architects and builders and it survived enough, though much mutilated, to allow a restoration in the 1930s. From the top fine views are to be had and there are several rooms to see.
