Pembroke was once a walled town and this tower overlooked one of the town's fortified towers - the old West Gate. The tower was severly damaged in the Civil War but was restored in 1931. The West Gate itself has long since vanished but some of the remains of the walls can be traced at the edge of the garden opposite. The wall between the gatehouse and the Westgate Tower was strengthened in the 17th century.
