Pembroke Castle is one of the countries most popular celtic castles with a long and interesting history which you can find out about on this website as well as details of tours and activities.
This is one of the few celtic castles that you will find in good condition throughout no just viewing ruins but a tour of a real castle. It was first built at the end of the eleventh century but was a construction made from the usual materials of the time which were timber and earth but this still managed to withstand a prolonged siege by celtic warriors even though the attackers decided to turn it into a battle of attrition and were nearly dying from starvation.
During the twelfth century the new Earl decided that the castle needed reinforcing and had it made into a brand new stone castle. At the centre there is a stone keep that is both very outstanding to look at and is very novel when looked at in an architectures view as there is a huge tower shaped like a cylinder and a dome top made from stone.
When touring this beautiful example of celtic castles you are free to ascend to the top of the keep and take a look at some of the amazing views where you will have some great photographic opportunities of the surrounding area as well as parts of the castle below and you can see how much of a defensive stronghold this place was.
When visiting celtic castles you always want to see as much of the castle as possible but often you find that you are not allowed in certain areas we let people virtually go anywhere and take pictures and sit stand talk and relax. One of the most popular places in the keep is the main room on the second floor this room has two medieval windows. All rooms within the keep are shaped in a circular fashion and the ceiling is eighty feet high.
The design of this celtic castle and keep was done by William Marshall whose uncle was the conqueror of Ireland and the main reason why the castle was converted to a stone castle at the beginning of the thirteenth century.
Pembroke castle os one of the celtic castles in wales that are run by charitable orginisations. Their aim is to make the castle as much fun as possible to people of all ages so they made an exhibition room where you can visit and see the castle as it would have been in medieval times and get a real feel for how they used to live.
